Helps for prevention and amelioration of Diabetes
Curcumin counteracts inflammation in Diabetes
The pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes, a curable disease, is perpetuated by cytokines that cause inflammation. Through its anti- inflammatory property, Curcumin modulates pathways, reduces the activity of proteins and enzymes that mediate inflammation, and restricts the production of inflammatory cytokines (TNF- α, IL-6, IL-1beta ), which inhibits the inflammation associated with diabetes.
Curcumin reduces oxidative stress in Diabetes
Oxidative stress plays a major role in pathogenesis of diabetes. Oxidative stress is the loss of balance between body’s natural antioxidant defences and production of reactive oxygen species.
Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are chemically reactive molecules that contain oxygen and bring about phenomena vital to normal cell functioning. However, high blood sugar levels causes an increased glucose uptake by Epithelial tissue, which leads to the excessive production of ROS, which causes drastic cell death and inflammation.
Curcumin, a known antioxidant, scavenges ROS, inhibits excessive glucose uptake and increases the levels of antioxidant enzymes, significantly lessening oxidative stress.
Curcumin lowers blood sugar levels
Curcumin functions as an anti-hyperglycaemic agent- it lowers elevated blood sugar in diabetes. This is done by:
• Stimulating insulin production
• Improving activity of pancreas cells
• Improving sensitivity to insulin
• Reducing inflammation
• Reducing production of glucose by liver
• Stimulating utilization of glucose by the body
• Regulating metabolic disorders.
A recent study demonstrated that Nano-curcumin supplementation in type 2 diabetes for 3 months helps in reducing blood sugar levels, glycated haemoglobin, triglyceride levels and even BMI.
It protects from heart risks
Endothelial dysfunction , an abnormality in inner tissue lining, is a common complication experienced by diabetic patients, due to high blood sugar levels.
A clinical study has proven that Curcumin is equally as effective as Atorvastatin, a commonly used drug for lowering cholesterol, in improving endothelial dysfunction and reduced inflammation and oxidative stress.
It lowers cholesterol levels
Curcumin is instrumental in lowering cholesterol levels, which are alarmingly disturbed in type-2 Diabetes.
It also improves antioxidant defences, regulates fat metabolism, affects intestinal absorption of cholesterol, similar to statins, conventional cholesterol drugs, but hold an added advantage of being natural and chemical-free.
